Hummus gets a makeover

Once primarily known only as a staple in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine, that sumptuous chickpea, lemon juice and tahini puree we know as hummus (with the food’s spelling as varied as its recipe) has slowly been catching on in America. But there was just one thing it needed in order to be truly Americanized: a packaging makeover.

When Israeli entrepreneur Ami Blashkovsky introduced the food to his American wife, New York television anchor Emily Frances, she put her finger on it - no pun intended.

"It's disgusting if you've been at a party and you don't know whose fingers have been in [a tub of hummus]," Frances explains. "You see crumbs and for me, it's just gross. I'm a bit of a germaphobe."
In addition to cutting out the germs, a bottle also makes hummus more condiment-friendly.

"The innovation of it is how we deliver it," Blashkovsky adds. "Pretty much everybody has the same response, which is 'how come nobody ever thought of this before?"
